Everything you need to make your decision
The Genie GS-4047 is a 40-foot rough terrain diesel scissor lift designed for outdoor construction, roofing, bridge maintenance, and any elevated work application where electric slab scissors cannot go. Four-wheel drive with all-terrain pneumatic tires handles gravel, compacted fill, soft ground, and graded surfaces up to 40% slope. The 1,500 lb platform capacity supports two workers plus a full material load — drywall, steel angle, pipe, or conduit — at 40 feet of platform height. At 46 feet of working height, the GS-4047 reaches the eave of a standard two-story building from grade. The oscillating front axle maintains four-wheel ground contact on uneven terrain, preserving stability on surfaces where rigid-axle machines would rock. A 36-inch fold-out platform extension provides additional reach over parapet walls without repositioning the machine. Genie's dual-fuel (diesel/LPG) option is available for sites requiring both outdoor power and indoor low-emission operation.

⚙️ Pothole Protection Bar

A mechanical bar extends outward from the platform's lower edge when elevated above 6 feet. If the machine approaches a floor opening, drop-off, or dock edge, the bar contacts the hazard before the wheel reaches it — automatically halting drive before a tip-over can occur. Non-defeatable by the operator.

🔒 Outrigger Interlock (RT Models)

Rough-terrain models cannot raise above a set height unless all four outriggers confirm positive ground contact. The interlock is mechanical — not software-only. A single outrigger without firm contact blocks elevation above the threshold, preventing elevation on an unstable base.

🛡️ OSHA-Compliant Platform Guarding

Full-height (43 in) guardrails with mid-rail and toe board meet OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI/SAIA A92.20 fall protection requirements. The self-closing entry gate uses a positive slam-latch that cannot be accidentally kicked open. Platform D-ring anchor for personal fall arrest (on most models).

📊 Load Management System

On-board sensors monitor platform weight continuously. Overloading locks out the lift function and displays a fault code — the machine will not raise until load is reduced to within rating. This protects the scissor mechanism from overload and prevents the stability limit from being exceeded.

How does this compare?

GS-4047 vs. JLG 4394RT: both are 40+ foot rough terrain diesel scissors with 4WD. The 4394RT reaches 43 feet (3 feet taller) and handles 45% grade (vs. 40% for the GS-4047). For most commercial construction, the GS-4047's 40 feet is sufficient and the price is lower. For applications requiring maximum height or steeper slopes, the JLG 4394RT is worth the premium. Both machines are field-serviceable with Deutz diesel engines — a major practical advantage over exotic engine choices.
